Polka Dot Afro Circus

Guess what movie I saw today?

Madagascar 3 Main

And I saw it in 3D! Never thought I’d be so excited to see a movie in 3D. Totally worth it!

Now I can’t stop singing the Afro circus song.

Addictive, right?

But since our favorite castaways are now in Europe, how about the multilingual song?

Seriously, I can’t stop singing it.

The Doo Wop Shop – for Disney fans of all ages.

About a year ago (almost to the day, it was May 25, 2011) I saw a video of The Doo Wop Shop singing a Disney medley. The video I saw was their 2010 performance and it made me smile. Now, while looking for the video I found out they recorded a studio version and then the 2011 Holiday Concert version (which is the one in this post).

P.S.: The Doo Wop Shop  (a.k.a. “The Shop”) is UMASS’ only all male A Capella group.

Spencer Bell Legacy (in Madison)

Today I’m in Madison, WI for another great time with friends, remembering and honoring Spencer Bell and his art at the Spencer Bell Legacy, or SBL.

Spencer Bell was a poet, a musician, an artist. In November 2006, suffering from stomach and back pains that almost incapacitated him, 20 year-old Spencer was convinced by his younger brother, Brady, (16yo at the time, who had just arrived to spend Thanksgiving with his brother) to go to the hospital. He was then diagnosed with Adrenal Cancer and passed away only 11 days later, in December 3rd, 2006. The SBL project has been happening every year ever since to keep his artistic legacy alive as well as to help raise money and awareness to Adrenal Cancer.

When I heard Tourist I just fell in love with his music. There was something about that guy, the guy in the song, that I had to know more about. I recommend to anyone to listen to this song.

Then I heard Beautiful More So and just couldn’t stop listening to him. His voice and lyrics were captivating.

Spencer kept many journals. In one of them, in September 2003, he wrote:

I’m honestly not sure where this life is going
And I just as honestly do not care
So long as I can love
And be loved
So long as I can inspire
And be inspired
So long as the sun keeps sliding through the sky,
And the rain still falls on occasion,
I’m sure that whatever supremely awaits me
Shall come
And when finality brings itself to me
I will not run and vainly avoid the inevitable
I will cast my arms out and blindly
Embrace my end
Just as I have always embraced whatever
Has come with the wind

And this is what his family wrote about him:

Every one of these words is true. Spencer did not worry about the future. He was a big fan of right now, this moment. He was inspired and is inspirational. He did love and is indeed, loved beyond measure.

And when the end came, he absolutely did not run. On the contrary, Spencer was our hero and our strength as he faced his own dire circumstances with uncommon courage and grace.

– Spencer’s Family

Today I thank Spencer, for being such an inspiration to many. For teaching us to live in the moment. For teaching us to embrace life and make every moment count, because there’s no plan B.

And I also thank Spencer’s family, for keeping his memory alive. For sharing him with us. For your kindness in sharing his legacy with strangers like me.

P.S.: You can watch the livestream of today’s SBL and be part of this great project that has inspired and continues to inspire many people. It starts at 1:45pm EST.

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

Somebody That I Used To Know is a song by Belgian-Australian singer and songwriter Gotye. It’s part of his third studio album Making Mirrors, and features New Zealand singer Kimbra. The song, written by Gotye, talks about his experiences with relationships.

Then, Canadian indie band Walk off the Earth made this cover of Gotye’s song:

Update: Ellen found out they all had only one guitar and gave each of them their very own.

Music Time with Kate Micucci

Maybe to you she’s Sabrina’s cousin, Shelly. Maybe she’s Stephanie Gooch. Or maybe she’s Oates. But now I want to talk about Kate Micucci and her music.

Micucci not only plays the ukulele, but also builds sand castles. Not kidding, they pay her to do that. Who’d have guessed you can make money building sand castles? Not me. But her comedic vein, apparent in her lyrics, is what draws me to her. She lives in L.A., so I haven’t had a chance to see her perform live, but thanks to technology, and YouTube, I’ve had plenty of opportunities to enjoy her shows.

Some of the songs I enjoy the most are Dear Deer (a letter to the deer in Pennsylvania to stay away from the woods or her dad will kill them), Walking in Los Angeles, Only Begun, and Out the door. They are the kind of songs that can put a smile on your face. Unless you’re picturing the dead deer, then you better not be smiling. That’d be wrong. Anyway, so here’s one of my favorites, Taking Chances:

People are weird,
They’re getting weirder
Look in the mirror-
It’s not much clearer.
Try to be good in the end.
Find your reflection, my friend,
And soon you will see it’s a good day for you

‘Cause it’s time for taking chances,
Whatever may be.
Find out what romance is,
And in the end you’ll see…

The video is from her show, Playing with Micucci. Amit Itelman is the guy playing with her.

P.S.: Okay, I just read that last line and I can see where I went wrong, but it’s a comedy show. Seriously. As serious as you can be when talking about a comedy show called Playing with Micucci anyway.

Music Time with Plastique

It’s music time! Oh, yeah!

The band from today’s post is a rock band from London called Plastique. They describe themselves as two Brazilians and a Brit who got together to make music.

Fabio Couto, Anelise Kunz, and Gabriel Ralls

Their sound is pretty cool. I like Stand Still, Heaven Falls, Butterflies, and so on. Girl of Prey it’s pretty awesome, and it’s one of my favorites, but my number one is still A Paper Cut From A Paper Kiss. Maybe because it was the first one I’ve listened to, I don’t know. In any case, here’s the song. Enjoy.

I’m not getting younger
I’m twenty-nine and I’m full of shit
Did you expect some kind of remorse?
A paper cut from a paper kiss
I’d say we’re more than even

P.S.: Right now they have a competition called The Plastique Butterflies Easter Egg Hunt and you can win a free album, you should check it out.
